The Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB) is an organization that implements national insurance schemes in the Netherlands. They make sure that you, your children or your parents receive child benefit, AOW pension or ANW survivor benefit. They have been doing this for more than a century, by order of the government and for more than 5 million clients throughout the entire country. The organization itself it trying to optimize their processes, so citizens get their benefits correctly and in time.

Novum, the innovation lab of the SVB was launched in 2017, creating smart solutions for citizens, using a variety of tools in order to help the SVB optimizing those processes. Being a small  innovation organization within a large governmental institution, creates numerous possibilities and the ability to experiment and validate quickly, small and with all kinds of new methodology's.

Alberga Consultancy was consulted shortly after the launch of Novum to help turn them into a mature innovation lab by facilitating Design Sprints, Research Sprints and coaching sessions. All these challenges were reviewed constantly and subject to an iterative process, in order to tweak the used methodologies into tools that can be deployed at anytime and transformed to anything you want them to be.

One of the Design Sprint challenge was 'creating a better process for students that want to study abroad'. The result of this Design Sprint was the so-called Digistupas, a digital student passport, connecting all organizations like DUO, SVB and Nuffic. The student can turn to his or her Digistupas to apply for a specific university abroad, find a house, arranging insurance and find a convenient checklist, to make sure everything is taking care of before leaving. This will give the student a good overview and the organizations all have one portal where they can present their information. The Digistupas is now developed and will be introduced in a few months. It is good example of using quick innovation strategies to tackle a huge problem and bring several organizations together during an entire week in order to come up with new ideas and turn them into strong concept.
